World Spirits Award 2021: The WSA presentation of the “crown jewels”: 13 x Awards, 15 x Spirits of the Year and 12 x Distilleries of the Year

World Spirits Award 2021:
The WSA presentation of the “crown jewels”:
13 x Awards, 15 x Spirits of the Year and 12 x Distilleries of the Year

The “World Spirits Award” is considered by many spirits enthusiasts and producers as the unofficial world championship within the sector. “We have been working towards this position in the market over the last 20 years – with constant fine tuning of quality and innovations.”

The WSA 2021 can once again boast a “full house”, after 50 samples more per year, every year for the past three years. One of the best qualified juries in the world has tasted 439 samples from 114 distilleries this year and rigorously but fairly evaluated them according to WSA definitions with their high level of expertise. The best of the best were distinguished with the coveted “World Spirits Awards”.

For the last four years, the participation curve at the WSA has risen steeply; the WSA has been bursting at the seams in regard to the number of samples and range of products submitted. The colourful flags of the 25 nations taking part also bring colour to the world of spirits. The quality of the tastings, the challenging training of the jury and the separate communication channels (Guide, Spirits Finder Apps with Channel on world-spirits.com and the TV format “Inside World Spirits”) have been praised by participants.

The World Spirits Award has a very special position amongst all international competitions with its classification of distilleries. As well as receiving medals, establishments are classified in the same way as is customary with, for example, the world’s best wines in Bordeaux. The distinctions range from “World Class” to “First Class”, with the top spot being “Distillery of the Year”.

The WSA superstars of 2021

At the “World Spirits Award”, two Austrian enterprises stood out as superstars in the world of spirits: The Styrian Feinbrennerei Tinnauer distillery with its strong and at the same time aromatic fruit distillates, alongside the Viennese liqueur manufacturer Gautier Mückstein & Ellinger. They top the list of those in this select circle.

The dominance of Austrian spirits producers was evident at the WSA 2021:
The league of superstars also includes Destillerie Franz Bauer, Horvath’s Spezereyen Kontor, the microdistillery Bernhard Leitner, the gin magnate Krauss, the German speciality distillery Liebl and Grenada Distillers with their Caribbean rums.

Franz Tinnauer: Styrian superstar

The fruit distillery is a traditional, certified family business run by Franz Tinnauer along with his daughter, Monika. Margarethe is the heart and soul of the residential buildings which nestle on the beautiful Mount Gamlitzberg. Following the motto “TASTEFUL. STYRIAN. STRONG”, distillation takes place entirely from the fruit itself and exclusively in a double distillation procedure to make the richest, fruit-concentrated distillates. In addition, only regional fruit varieties are processed, which mostly come from their own land – quality is, of course, the most important factor. As it is the understanding in the business that alcohol is a carrier for all aromas, all fine distillates contain over 40% alcohol by volume.

The high-proof distillate of approx. 80% alcohol by volume is stored for at least one year, and then there are five graduation levels: Classic – aromatic and very fruity as a clear distillate, at least one year old, at least 42% alcohol by volume; Reserve – at least two years old, at least 50% alcohol by volume; Reserve Zigarrenbrand cigar brandy – at least three years in French oak barrels, at least 50% alcohol by volume; Grand Reserve – special vintages, clear brandies, at least three years matured, cigar brandies stored in barrels at least five years, usually above 60% alcohol by volume. In the product range, which also includes liqueurs and spirits, there is something for every taste, be it mild, sweet or very strong.

The World Class Distillery 2021 (Distillery of the Year 2021 – Gold & World Spirits Award) received double gold for Sauvignon Tresterbrand Reserve (pomace brandy), Birnenquittenbrand Reserve (pear quince brandy), Zwetschken Zigarrenbrand Reserve (damson cigar brandy) (Spirit of the Year 2021) and Roter Williamsbirnenbrand (pear brandy) (Spirit of the Year & World Spirits Award 2021), gold for Zwetschkenbrand (damson brandy), and silver for Wacholdergeist (juniper spirit).

Gautier Mückstein: High percentage spirit with a history

As Austria’s first climate-neutral spirits’ manufacturer, Gautier Mückstein is an advocate for the safeguarding and smart use of valuable resources. Since 1880, this traditional business from Vienna has stood out with a constantly increasing, wide range of products. Spirits, liqueurs and a range of punch varieties are part of the assortment, but classics such as Inländer rum and brandy also promise quality, enjoyment and sustainability.

Over 130 years ago, Wilhelm Hauck started off with a small production hall for spirits, liqueurs and fruit juices in Vienna. Since being taken over by Wilhelm Mückstein in 1948 and the acquisition of the Gautier & Co company in Perchtoldsdorf in 1955, the company has been managed under the name Gautier Mückstein Getränke GmbH. The product range at that time already included various types of punch, liqueurs, vodka and Inländer rum. In 2003, Ing. Florian Mückstein took over the management of the beverage manufacturer. In 2007, Ellinger & Co. was successfully integrated into the company group and the product range expanded to include aromas, essences and raw materials for the food industry. Every year, approximately 700,000 bottles are filled.

In 2019, Gautier Mückstein launched the blossom series and the ChocoLat series. Hibiscus blossom, elderflower, rose blossom and lime put summer in a glass, while the chocolate liqueurs are available in the varieties of nougat, chilli, banana, mint, orange and pear.

The World Class Distillery 2021 (Distillery of the Year 2021 – Silver) received double gold for ChocoLat Mint, ChocoLat Orange (Spirit of the Year 2021), Marzipan Cream Liqueur (Spirit of the Year & World Spirits Award 2021), ChocoLat Chilli and Speculoo Liqueur, gold for ChocoLat Nougat, ChocoLat Banana and Coconut Liqueur, and silver for Amaretto Liqueur and Punschkrapfen Liqueur.
