Klippenziege: New era in the world of gin

In December 2015, four friends captured the ‘spirit’ of an idea: they were thinking about gin. Nearly a year later a small batch was bottled by hand. The individuality of a gin lies in the combination of the botanicals, in this case it is the exotic selection: mate tea, goji berries, physalis and a hint of rose. The Klippenziege is a New Western Dry Gin, in which juniper plays the main role amongst the other botanicals.

It is produced in the Habbel Distillery, which guarantees excellent quality thanks to its experience – it was established in 1878 and is now in the family’s fourth generation. The former Korn distillery in Sprockhövel with adjoining farmland is now the largest fruit distillery in the Ruhr region, as a traditional manufacturer it stands out with its attention to detail. The entire manufacturing process at Klippenziege can also be observed on-site.

The bottle and the label are also special. Designer Levent Aydin drew it carefully by hand, and then digitalised it before perfecting it. First it is printed, then coated, then stamped and embossed. The elegant result stands for friendship, solidarity and love. Working together in a friendly and familiar atmosphere connects people with a passion for life who share one important belief: that the product should encourage people to slow down, allowing for mindful enjoyment.

At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for Mate Dry Gin.

Modus-Vivendi -Small fruits with a big history

There are plenty of stories surrounding the history of damassine plum - small, violet fruits in the plum family. The botanical name of 'prunus damascena' is indicative of the probable origins of the fruit: Damascus in Syria. The Roman gourmet and most famous author of cook books in Antiquity, Marcus Gavius Apicius, praised the fruit in one recipe as a delicious accompaniment to lamb. It then found its way to Europe through the Duke of Anjou who discovered the fruits in around 1220 during a crusade to Jerusalem. During the Middle Ages, the trees grew predominantly in the gardens of the royal houses and parishes.

At the end of the 16th century, planting began on the South banks of Lake Biel in Switzerland and the Jura mountains seemed particularly suited to plum varieties. Harvesting damassine plums is very time-consuming and therefore they rarely come to market for fresh consumption. And their use in fine brandy has so far also only been of local significance. As they say in the Jura region: "A good meal without a glass of damassine brandy is like a day without sunshine".

The young Modus-Vivendi company in Biel has brought a new name and exclusive equipment to this 'historic distillate' in order to increase the product recognisability. The raw materials are provided by Roger Grimm and Adrian Eberhard, who planted hundreds of damassine shrubs in an ideal south-facing location in Luescherz, on the South banks of Lake Biel, from 2003 to 2008. The owner of Grillette Domaine De Cressier, J. P. Mürset, also represents a partner who has been heavily involved with the cultivation of damassine plums in Le Landeron since the 1990s.

This speciality product from the Swiss lakes region was awarded a bronze medal at its première at the World-Spirits Award.

Lehar – The liqueur manufacturer with a successful recipe

Josef Lehar, a relative of Franz Lehar (the ‘king of operetta’), established an enterprise in 1902 that also had to do with composition – in his case harmonious distilled spirits, vinegar, oil, and tea – and which was able to continue growing, even through times of crisis. At the first international exhibition for ‘Trade, Commerce and Social Hygiene’ in 1908, a herb liqueur – the ‘Original Lehar Bitter’ – was awarded a certificate of honour. The company was taken over in 1976 by Mr. and Mrs. Wiesböck and transformed into the company it is today. Since March 2007, Dietmar Messner, a qualified graduate in business administration and a market researcher, has been running the business according to tradition as the owner.

Today, a wide range of high quality products is available at the modern company in Ebreichsdorf: the company focuses predominantly on the production and bottling of alcoholic products from Austria and abroad, the production and trade of speciality foods and diabetic products as well as other health, pharmacy and cosmetics products. The spirits sector deals with liqueurs, brandies, spirits, schnapps, rum and bitters as well as international brands, Gerasdorfer brandies and fruits in alcohol.

Together with the more than 100 years of experience, high processing reliability and strict quality controls ensure an appealing price-performance ratio for all Austrian retail chains, regionally organised and non-organised specialist dealers, retailers and the catering industry. Lehar’s success is not limited to Austria – the company’s fine products are also appreciated internationally, with exports to Germany, Hungary, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Slovakia.

Lehar’s imaginative compositions won classification as a ‘Master Class Distillery 2014’ at the World Spirits Award, with gold for the Likörmacher Herb Liqueur, Likörmacher Egg-Poppy Liqueur, Likörmacher Advocaat-Rum-Coconut and Likörmacher Hazelnut, and silver for the Likörmacher Advocaat-Vanilla and Likörmacher Damson Liqueur.
