Cologne Spirits: Cheers from Cologne!

The team at Gin de Cologne is actually a traditional promotion agency. They are all from Cologne and true gin enthusiasts. Concepts are developed for parties and festivals, in clubs and at points of sale. Managing Direc-tor Abbass Khatami had the idea of producing a gin in 2017. Whatever he does, he does with passion – and the rest is a story of success. Following intensive preparation and in coordination with experienced distillers, in November 2017 the first product was launched: Gin de Cologne. Made in Cologne, but not just for the people of Cologne, as this delicious treat was to be distributed around the world.

For 20 years, the agency has also represented big brand names in the spirit world (Captain Morgan, Baileys, Aperol, Ouzo 12, etc.), and so the team know how to market a product effectively and to the right target group. By a variety of means, including tastings at trade fairs, an impressive level of recognition has been reached and Gin de Cologne has been established as a new brand. It can also be seen on large billboards as the agency won the 18/1 Award 2018 with the slogan ‘Alle guten Dinge sind dry’ (‘All good things are dry’).

Aside from good marketing and a good story, the product also has to be right. In this case the concept is to appeal to everybody. Twelve botanicals – including lime, lemon and orange peel, hibiscus, lavender and, of course, juniper – provide the London Dry Gin with fine nuances which tickle the taste buds of gin rookies and connoisseurs alike.

At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for Gin de Cologne.

Distillerie Meunier – Aromatic specialities from the south of France

The Meunier company is more than 200 years old and was founded in 1809 by Charles Meunier, a botanist from the region of Dauphiné in the Alps of Southern France. The distillery lies in the foothills of the Vercors mountain range, where many businesses have characterised the history of French spirit specialities over generations. Meunier has built on this experience too, concentrating on the manufacture of spirits based on plants and fruits.

The trademark is the traditional herb liqueur, Génépi, from the genepi or spiked wormwood (Artemisia genipi). Based on the core skill of artisanal production, a London Dry Gin was also introduced to the product range. The alcoholic base comes from beetroot, which is mixed with a balanced mixture of twelve plant extracts. The result: a refined composition with a fine aroma.

On a guided tour, visitors can find out many facts about the distilling history of the region, about the Meunier family, about the raw materials, and about the secrets of liqueur production. At Easter and before Christmas, there are also many varieties of chocolates available in addition to the spirits.

At the World Spirits Award, the jury decided the gin was worthy of a gold medal.

Family of Hounds – Sought and found

Andrea Frigerio and his English wife, Lina, live in Monaco with their two dogs, Spot and Magda, two wonderful additions to the family. Since they started taking the two for walks in town, they have made many new friends. Andrea and Lina used to be red wine drinkers, who spent their holidays in the wine hills of Italy and France. It was only in 2013, while visiting a country estate in England, that they discovered their love for a good G & T. This developed into a passion, and their discussions soon revolved around what it would be like to create their own gin.

They tasted intensively, discarded aromas they didn’t like, and extracted the aromas they did. Together with the master distiller in an old distillery in Piedmont, they created their recipe for the gin: juniper, lemon and orange peel, pink grapefruit, lavender, thyme, cardamom, ginger and coriander. The first three ingredients come from Italy, the rest from Asia. “The juniper is really loud, like a brightly lit disco floor, and the other botanicals dance around it. Together, they are like a lively, attention-seeking dog that can’t sit still.”

In the future, they are looking to establish a small family of spirits, from gin to vodka and from grappa to vermouth – unmistakable in taste, but accessible to everyone. The core of the philosophy is going out with good friends, enjoying a good meal and even better spirits. The first step has already been taken …
