Rheinbrand: Exciting project and influential people

The initiator, Raphael Wyniger, is a passionate restaurateur and the first Swiss ‘Hotelier of the Year’. The company Rheinbrand Spirits GmbH complements his businesses in the Wyniger Group. The second member of the team is the wine academic Adrian Baumgartner. This wine and spirits expert had already been involved in the development of a gin. Production takes place following London Dry Gin procedures in the canton of Aargau, under the watchful eye of Ruedi Käser. He is one of the leading Swiss distillers, and his credo is to work by hand. Only small batches of 500 bottles are distilled at a time and are hand-bottled after the necessary resting period.

The ingredients are carefully selected, whereby regions along the River Rhine are integrated with their products – a perfect basis for spirits and an homage to the myths of the river. The water comes from the Rhine spring at Lake Tomasee in Grisons, the juniper and mountain herbs also come from Grisons, the cherries from the Basel region, the elderflowers from Alsace, the Riesling from Rheingau, and the sea salt from the region around Rotterdam. It is refined with lemon and lemongrass. The result is a gin with character and personality, and with harmonious botanicals thanks to great craftsmanship.

CBD hemp from Allschwil in the region is added to the distillate for Rheinbrand Gin Hemp Edition. This is available legally, has no effect on the nervous system and is not intoxicating, but rather has a calming effect. Meticulous tests and lots of patience were necessary, as finding the right mixture was a challenge. The light grassiness makes the gin an exciting element in the art of mixing. For Oak Aged Teufelhof Whisky, half of the volume was refined in a 128-litre Madeira barrel for four months.

At the World Spirits Award, there was Gold for Rheinbrand Dry Gin Hemp Edition and Oak Aged Teufelhof Whisky – Madeira finish, and Silver for Rheinbrand Dry Gin.

Distillery Cutura: Perfect craftsmanship through dedication

Marijo Cutura’s roots lie in former Yugoslavia, a region where distilling schnapps is still deeply rooted. “My granddad was a keen schnapps distiller, now I have taken over with dedication and commitment. A passion for the trade, a love of detail and a fascination with gin characterise my creations. They are intended to enrich special moments in life. I would like to bring people together and delight them with high-quality taste experiences.”

He continues this tradition today in Ilsfeld in the Swabian lowlands at the gateway to Heilbronn. The cultivated landscape is characterised by orchards and vineyards – a perfect inspiration for the products. In addition, hand-picked ingredients are meticulously prepared and often distilled multiple times in a small handmade copper still. All of this ensures that the distillates and liqueurs are imbued with a unique character and a special touch.

The Dry Gin – with an intense hint of juniper and a waft of citrus fruit – is an ideal basis for tonic waters and cocktails but can also be enjoyed neat or on the rocks. Chef Pero Adriatic Dry Gin – developed with the Croatian gourmet chef Pero Savanovic – brings together all the merits of a New Western Dry Gin and a Mediterranean touch. Modest juniper is complemented by a filigreed citrus aroma and rounded off by the floral length of hibiscus.

At the World Spirits Award, there was gold for Chef Pero Adriatic Dry Gin.

2B Hemp Gin: Styrian gin experience

Two visionaries, Armin Breinl (doctor, drink creator, musician) and Wolfgang Thomann (gin maker), have created a completely new gin experience with real hemp powder: 2B HEMP GIN (inspired by AEIJST). On 17th November 2018, the two invited guests to the first tasting of 2B HEMP GIN in the AEIJST GIN distillery in St. Nikolai in the Sausal Valley.

Hemp has always been highly valued for its medicinal properties, yet recently has been demonised as an addictive drug and has suffered under its ensuing prohibition, originating in the USA. These days hemp is regaining importance and is being used more as a luxury food as well as in medicine as a therapeutic agent.

The Lifestyle Trading company, run by Armin Breinl, is an innovative beverage producer, which is already known amongst trade professionals for its sugar-free ‘func- tional fruit drinks’.
