2B Hemp Gin: Styrian gin experience
Two visionaries, Armin Breinl (doctor, drink creator, musician) and Wolfgang Thomann (gin maker), have created a completely new gin experience with real hemp powder: 2B HEMP GIN (inspired by AEIJST). On 17th November 2018, the two invited guests to the first tasting of 2B HEMP GIN in the AEIJST GIN distillery in St. Nikolai in the Sausal Valley.
Made from organic juniper berries, this innovative gin has an impressive, mild and fruity taste and a typical hemp note. Due to its unique aroma, it not only tastes good neat, but also creates a ‘wow’ effect in cocktails – as proven in the long drink Styrian Pale Gin AEIJST refined with 2B HEMP.
For thousands of years, hemp has been grown as a valuable plant, be it for rope, fabric, paper or as an active ingredient in ointments and tinctures. Hemp has always been highly valued for its medicinal properties, yet recently has been demonised as an addictive drug and has suffered under its ensuing prohibition, originating in the USA. These days hemp is regaining importance and is being used more as a luxury food as well as in medicine as a therapeutic agent.
The Lifestyle Trading company, run by Armin Breinl, is an innovative beverage producer, which is already known amongst trade professionals for its sugar-free ‘func- tional fruit drinks’. The drinks have a high fruit content (more than 50 per cent) and additional natural, vital substances and have an energising, relaxing and regenerative effect.
At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for 2B HEMP GIN.

Aldi Ireland: Gin and whiskey in retail
Aldi Ireland has several top products in its spirit range: Boyle’s Gin from the Blackwater Distillery and Ardfallen Whiskey from the West Cork Distillery, in addition, Mo Chara Passionfruit & Mango Gin from the Old Carrick Mill.
The Blackwater Distillery has been an Aldi partner since 2016 and developed the private label Boyle’s Gin exclusively for the Irish and British retail market. The product volume of the Blackwater Distillery for Aldi has risen strongly in recent years, whereby 140,800 bottles of the gin series were sold in 2018. The successful gin brand is manufactured in Blackwater Valley, West Waterford, with selected imported ingredients as well as regional apples, blackcurrants and elderflower. CEO Peter Mulryan – former TV producer and author of the book ‘The Whiskeys of Ireland’ – explains, “The partnership with Aldi has helped us to increase turnover enormously, and also to have the security to invest and expand. This includes on-site bottling facilities and a visitor centre.” Ardfallen Whiskey from the West Cork Distillery got its name from the region in County Cork where the malted barley comes from, and is only manufactured in small batches. The business was founded in 2003 by childhood friends who started out with only two small stills they had bought in Switzerland. Now the largest distillery in the country, it currently employs over 80 staff and exports to around 70 countries.
Beim World-Spirits Award 2025 gab es Gold für Ardfallen 10 Year Old Whiskey, Dúchas Irish Whiskey, Silver für Ardfallen Triple Cask Whiskey, Boyle‘s Sloe & Damson Gin, Dolmen Honey Moonshine.

Appenzeller Alpenbitter: An aromatic experience from the Appenzellerland region
In 1902, Emil Ebneter and Beat Kölbener laid the foundation stone for Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG. They developed a natural product of excellent quality and with an incomparable aroma, even recommended as a medicinal product by doctors: Appenzeller Alpenbitter with 42 selected herbs. Only two people from the founding and owning family have access to the recipes and compose the blends for further processing in the herb chamber. The original recipe of the most popular bitter in Switzerland is a well-guarded secret. Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG is an exclusively family-run business even today, founded in 1908 as the cooperative Emil Ebneter & Co. In 2006, it was renamed as Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG as a subsidiary of the Emil Ebneter & Co. AG holding.
Thanks to its consistent quality, as well as accomplished marketing and wide distribution, Appenzeller Alpenbitter has become one of the strongest selling spirits on the Swiss market. The traditional product regularly receives awards – from the Exposition Internationale 1907 in Paris through today. The company values innovation and in recent years has added to the product range with various specialities with a prime focus on quality, care and the use of natural raw ingredients. In addition, Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG manufactures licensed products for international suppliers and is the general representative in Switzerland for other spirits.
At the World Spirits Award 2025, Double Gold was awarded to Appenzeller Alpenbitter (Spirit of the Year & Award 2025), Gold to GIN 27 Appenzell Dry Gin, Amarno Amaro Alpino, Kuuhl Minz and Abbacella Orange, and Silver to GIN 27 SOUL OF WOOD.

Samalens - Specialists with a long-standing tradition
The homeland of the Armagnac is the Gascony region, which was awarded the patent for the special "Alambic Armagnacais" distilling process by Louis XVII. in 1818. Unlike cognac, which is distilled twice, Armagnac is distilled only once in large copper stills.
The Armagnac manufacturer Samalens of Laujuzan was founded in 1882 by Jean Samalens. Today, Pierre Samalens is at the head of the family business. The best Armagnacs are produced here at the heart of the vineyards and oak forests. The wines come exclusively from excellent locations in the Bas-Armagnac region, which experts claim supplies the highest quality - connoisseurs certainly appreciate the finesse and delicate fruit aromas of the products. The distilled wines are then matured under optimal conditions over many years in new oak casks, made of course from hand-crafted Gascony wood.
The largest distillery in the area was renovated in 1973 and now produces various qualities ranging from the VSOP to the Vieille Relique. The youngest Armagnac of this powerful blend is 15 years old. Long-standing tradition and modern technology are certainly no contradiction at Samalens with traditional distilling facilities and electronic controls both in use. A great deal of care goes into the equipment used: the exclusive carafes are of particular note and have enjoyed considerable success even in Japan and Taiwan, both very difficult markets. The company's treasure chest contains one of the most significant collections of old Armagnacs dating back to 1888.
Both Armagnacs impressed at the World-Spirits Award with gold for the VSOP and the Gold Single de Samalens.
