The superstars of the World Spirits Award can rightly feel like ‘world champions’. “We have painstakingly and consistently worked towards this position on the market over two decades – with constant fine-tuning of quality, adaptations, innovations and the incorporation of tradition and culture,” says mastermind Wolfram Ortner.
The award celebration took place at Stiegl-Gut Wildshut in St. Pantaleon in the province of Salzburg on 23 March. In addition to the celebration, it also included a tour of the distillery and the final ‘WSA Family Dinner’. Interestingly, due to the high quality of their spirits we had already decided to host the awards ceremonies of the last two years at certain distilleries, which then ended up winning awards!
2024 was a special year for WSA in many respects: for the first time, awards went to participants who had been knocking at the door for a long time, including participants from Turkey and Japan. A new feature was the rating of sake and shōchū. Other countries, other cultures and therefore other traditions. WSA of course tries to treat all participants as fair as possible and to rate their products objectively. For example, whereas a fruit liqueur made from stone fruit with too much aromatic stone content and possibly also with slight oxidation is considered suboptimal in Europe, spirits lovers in other countries might enjoy the more intense bitter almond or benzaldehyde flavours. However, we can only do an objective, classic rating and try to incorporate the basis of the definitions around these traditions and their products. But too much is and always will be too much! Of course, this also applies to all other products that deviate from WSA definitions and styles. That being said, a classic will always be judged as a classic!
Never before in the long history of the World Spirits Award have so few titles been awarded. The reason for this is the rule book, which is based on the broadest possible basis of different samples in different categories and a defined number of samples and participants per product group and category. The number of points achieved also plays a role in the rating: the ‘Award’ or ‘Spirit of the Year’ titles can only be awarded to double gold winners. The number of participants per category is also clearly defined for winning the title of ‘Distilleries of the Year’: titles are not simply awarded, but must be won with the top quality of the individual products. The key to absolute success is breaking the ‘sound barrier’ of at least 95.3 points – this is where the awarding of double gold begins. At WSA 2024, these limits were narrowly missed in many categories – tough, but true!

The perhaps most highly qualified jury in the world tasted 300 samples from 77 distilleries this year and rated them according to the tough but fair WSA definitions with a high degree of expertise. The best of the best were awarded the highly prized ‘World Spirits Awards’.

With the classification of the distilleries, the World Spirits Award enjoys a special position among all the worldwide competitions. Apart from the overall medals, we also classify establishments according to their fields, as is customary, for example, for the world’s best Bordeaux wines. The differentiation ranges from ‘World Class’ to ‘First Class’ and is topped with ‘Distillery of the Year’.

St. Kilian Distillers: Whisky made in Germany following Scottish tradition
Born from the idea of creating the largest whisky distillery in Germany, the investment banker and owner Andreas Thümmler, the whisky legend David F. Hynes from Dublin and the master distiller Mario Rudolf started converting their plan into reality in 2012. Four years later, their dream was established in Rüdenau near Miltenberg, based on the Scottish model, and within a short time the little village had developed into the centre of German whisky. A willingness to experiment is a top priority. Alongside a wide variety of malts, it also comprises way more than 370 different sizes and types of barrel, where whisky can mature under ideal conditions near the distillery – amid the pristine nature of the Odenwald forest in former NATO bunkers.
At St. Kilian, craftsmanship and tradition meet technology and innovation. Scottish washbacks and copper pot stills, coupled with German engineering skills, delivered the first distillate for barrel number 1 on Saint Patrick’s Day in 2016. At the end of 2020, they succeeded in what was no doubt the most successful whisky launch in Germany: the combination of single malt whisky made in Germany with the cult figure Bud Spencer on the label. One year later, two whiskies followed with Spencer’s film partner Terence Hill.
The year 2021 marked another milestone in the history of St. Kilian Distillers. The first heavy metal edition, ‘Tunes of War’, paid tribute to the German band Grave Digger, founded in 1980. Further single malt whiskies followed in cooperation with Grave Digger, including the unusual, earth cask matured heavy metal special bottling, ‘Exhumation’. After the great success of this first St. Kilian Heavy Metal Edition, another collaboration with the legendary British band Judas Priest followed. This led to single malt whiskies such as ‘50 Heavy Metal Years’ and ‘British Steel’ as well as the ‘Angel of Retribution’ and ‘Ram it Down’ editions produced with ultra heavily peated barley malt. Each was bottled in a 0.7-litre metal bottle with an ornate label, to the delight of both metal fans and whisky enthusiasts alike.
In addition to top-class whiskies, there are also premium liqueurs produced in Rüdenau. At the heart of the liqueurs are St. Kilian Single Malt Spirit (New Make) and Single Malt Whisky. The eclectic liqueur collection ranges from fruity-fresh and creamy-sweet to gently spicy and smoky-peaty varieties. There is a liqueur to suit every taste. The St. Kilian liqueurs are bottled in elegant, matte black 500 ml pot still glass bottles. A distinctive design with delicious contents.

Medals & variety winners
77 participants and distilleries from 25 nations (islands) took part in the “World Spirits Award 2024”, submitting 450 spirits for consideration. With the presented products ranging from brandies to gin, rum, fruit spirits and 100% distillates. The results are based on the WOB 100-point evaluation system tailored to spirits; objective assessment is ensured by an international jury of tasters with many years of experience.
Distinctions are the reflection of the distillers’ work and an appreciation of perfect products. Based on the slogan “Simply the Best in Spirits”, only the best products are entered into the competition and receive excellent reviews from the strict jury.
293 medals were awarded – 19 double golds (10 of them Spirits of the Year), 159 golds, 103 silvers and 8 bronze medals. A peripheral detail: 7 products were considered faulty, too inadequate or were not tasted.
The results are based on the WOB 100-point evaluation system, which is specially tailored to the world of spirits. An experienced international jury of tasters ensured an objective assessment.

Flashes on the horizon
For some years now, a few aperitif drinks or mixed products (premixed or ready-to-drink) have been appearing on the market and at WSA for a rating. These tread a fine line between Campari and alcopops. Bacardi has now also entered this market and sells low-alcohol products in small glass bottles and aluminium cans.
It’s ‘RUMbling’ in the world of spirits
It seems that the rum trend is growing worldwide, not just in traditional rum producing countries. Sometimes, however, you can’t be sure whether you are drinking a liqueur or heavily sweetened rum. An upper limit for sugar content was recently introduced here, although this in turn raises the question of which producing countries it should apply to?
There was an attractive range of rums at WSA – from Canada and Cuba to Trinidad and Tobago and French Polynesia. We are talking here about rums produced from a molasses or sugar cane base.
Ready-mixed rum drinks with a low alcohol content are also still on the rise – the concepts are based on classic models and are sold as long drink ready-to-drink products, such as Spiced & Cola or Mojito.
Gin continues to do the business
At their peak, there were more than 100 rums to taste at WSA, but this number has almost halved in the last two years. From a sensory point of view, London Dry Gins are almost on a par with the ‘modern variant’, New Western Style Gins. Gins with truffles are continuing to gain ground. They are not to everybody’s taste, but have a growing cult following. The classic would be a perfectly aromatic London Dry Gin, but this is now head-to-head with the trendy New Western Style products.
It is not just ‘Grey Panthers’ who like emulsion liqueurs and cream liqueurs.
From Africa to Cyprus, emulsion liqueurs can be found in a wide range of varieties: whether fruity, savoury or simply aromatic in taste, from citrus to chilli to the classic cream liqueur, such as African Cream by KWV.
The base alcohols also vary, from neutral alcohol to brandy and aromatic whisky.
On the rocks or simply neat, whether with vanilla, hazelnut or chocolate flavour: the fan community ranges from young to old.
The sun is now also rising at WSA
Spirits from the Land of the Rising Sun were rated for the first time. Two producers from Japan submitted not only whisky and limoncello but also sake and shōchū, traditional Asian and Japanese spirits respectively. Sake is made from rice, and there are many different variations in terms of production and taste. You have to train yourself in the sensory variety in order to properly enjoy it. Sparkling sake is a fizzy variant. Sake pomace serves as the basis for shōchū, whose aromas can range from pineapple and mushrooms to spices such as cinnamon. The tradition of these classic spirits goes back many centuries.
Aniseed can never be ignored
There is always a selection of aniseed-based spirits at WSA. The dominant aromas are always variants of aniseed, and sometimes in combination with other spices or herbs. Regional traditions write the recipes. In addition, the alcohols used are always different: neutral alcohol, alcohol from grapes, raisins or figs. And of course every distillery also has its own individual characteristics and flavours.

The Sound of World Spirits Music
That Spirits can have a sound is certainly a new experience or even a new approach to many friends of noble Spirits. WSA and the Carinthian cult band "HUMUS" have jointly developed the concept of sounding spirits to catch this magical phenomenon. Six episodes of "The Sound of ..." were produced as short music videos with much sensitivity and effort: "The Sound of Rum, ... Vodka, ... Gin, ... Bourbon, ... Tequila and ... Alpine Schnapps."
From the very first rhythms onwards, the Spirits theme is instantly recognizable. The perfect musical enjoyment is complemented by the respective exquisite noble spirit.

World Spirits Shots
Wolfram Ortner’s flagship concerning spirits is the TV format “Inside World Spirits”. Now he has created a lighter version, the “Inside World Spirits Shots”.
The title says it all: it includes short video clips – “shots”, which are naturally published exclusively on the internet whenever they deal with spirits.
The “Spirits Shots” are presented in a professionally competent, informative and entertaining manner to the viewers: the protagonists are spirits from the whole world and everything else surrounding this highly “spiritual” subject.
Here are some subjects to get a for it:

- The wine grape: from grape via lees to brandy
- Multi-variant aniseed spirits from around the world
- Properly tasting and enjoying spirits

Mastermind Wolfram Ortner is working carefully on the implementation of the concept “World Spirits Tasting Video” with its centre stage directly in the WOB distillery in the Nock-Land. TV stands for “Tasting Videos” as well as for “Television”: The videos are both offered to TV stations and published on the platform YouTube as trailers. In the secure area at www.world-spirits.com, registered users can watch new episodes of “Inside World Spirits© with Wolfram Ortner” every 3 weeks. Specials round off the programme and are also disseminated on the internet and the website. The beginning was “How to taste spirits correctly”, with humorous and ironic instructions!
“Inside World Spirits”, a witty mixture of entertaining talk and information about the subject “Spirits of the World”, is set to become our flagship. Ortner’s interviewees are a distiller, an audience representative and celebrity, as well as the Swiss landscape architect and botanical specialist Patrick Altermatt.
In 2019 the first series with 15 episodes was shot. In the form of a relaxed conversation (15 minutes) the videos encompass knowledge on the chosen themes as well as technical information on production which are completed with a presentation and sensory analysis of three products consistent with the theme of the programme. Of course, the producers of the individual products are presented orally and in pictures.
Nor is music neglected: the group “Humus” has composed and presented live the soundtrack for six episodes consistent with the subject.
The predominant language is German, and the individual takes are dubbed into English or vice versa. Example: In a Gin episode, we talk about the production of the premium spirits, discuss different styles such as London Dry Gin, New Western Style Gin or Sloe Gin and then sensorially break down three products. In addition, a botanical, such as herbs and spices, is presented in each episode and analysed for its suitability in cooking or as an ingredient in a spirit.
