Ländle Schnaps: Gin and whisky from the ‘Schnapshüsle’ at Höchst

Hubert Fink, a distiller from Höchst in the Rhine delta at Lake Constance, started to manufacture gin, whisky and fine brandies years ago. The fruit comes from the surrounding meadow orchards, while the Vorarlberg maize for the whisky is cultivated by the family on small fields. What started as a hobby has become a top-notch little enterprise where everybody lends a helping hand. Every bottle is filled and labelled by hand with attention to detail. The products can be sampled and purchased at the ‘Schnapshüsle’ next to the old Rhine Valley house where the family lives.

In 2015, Hubert Fink started experimenting with his own gin. Many hours and many distillates later, Ländle Dry Gin was ready for its market launch. It is set with the best species and highly aromatic juniper berries for an exact time period, then distilled carefully once again and finally refined with the purest spring water from a Vorarlberg mountain spring. It is put to market in a distinctive white clay bottle with a label that looks like old wood.

The whisky is the latest product in the range, for which an old local type of maize was sown, cultivated, harvested, husked and tied together for drying by hand, ground with a little mill and mashed. It was stored for five years in oak barrels specially imported from America and then, just like the gin, filled into striking, non-fading clay bottles. It is scarcely possible to do more by hand.

At the World Spirits Award, there was gold for Ländle Dry Gin, and silver for Ländle Whisky.

myAlps: ISEL°GIN: Premium product from the Alps

This Premium Mountain Gin made in East Tyrol has been produced since 2017 by Marcel Steiner, Michael Obwexer and distiller Josef Berger. The idea behind it was to put a regional premium product on the market that went with the times yet also stood out on the vast premium gin market.

With this handmade product, all botanicals are prepared and processed by hand. The gin is distilled according to old traditions with a 100-year-old furnace, hand-fired with various types of wood, on 85-year-old Josef Berger’s farm. Uncompromising quality without additives or artificial aromas has been the philosophy here for over 60 years. All bottles are filled, and each label stuck on, by hand.

For this Alpine-Mediterranean gin, the geographical location of East Tyrol, to the south of the Alps and near the Italian border, offered quite a bit of potential for the best ingredients. Organic oranges and organic limes from Friuli, cranberries from Tyrol, native stone pine and mountain thyme give the ‘blue’ ISEL°GIN Klassik its fine aroma with a lighter juniper note. Since 2018, the ISEL°GIN BLACK EDITION has been available for friends of classic gin. Plenty of juniper, black pepper, lemongrass, rosemary and chokeberries provide a wide range of aromas and a bit more power – a perfect alternative to the classic. Production takes place in small quantities of no more than 100 litres or 200 bottles per month. Customers include bars and hotels, and it is delivered to many European countries. The fact that most customers order time and again is a good sign of their approval.

At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for ISEL°GIN BLACK EDITION, and bronze for ISEL°GIN KLASSIK.

Klippenziege: New era in the world of gin

In December 2015, four friends captured the ‘spirit’ of an idea: they were thinking about gin. Nearly a year later a small batch was bottled by hand. The individuality of a gin lies in the combination of the botanicals, in this case it is the exotic selection: mate tea, goji berries, physalis and a hint of rose. The Klippenziege is a New Western Dry Gin, in which juniper plays the main role amongst the other botanicals.

It is produced in the Habbel Distillery, which guarantees excellent quality thanks to its experience – it was established in 1878 and is now in the family’s fourth generation. The former Korn distillery in Sprockhövel with adjoining farmland is now the largest fruit distillery in the Ruhr region, as a traditional manufacturer it stands out with its attention to detail. The entire manufacturing process at Klippenziege can also be observed on-site.

The bottle and the label are also special. Designer Levent Aydin drew it carefully by hand, and then digitalised it before perfecting it. First it is printed, then coated, then stamped and embossed. The elegant result stands for friendship, solidarity and love. Working together in a friendly and familiar atmosphere connects people with a passion for life who share one important belief: that the product should encourage people to slow down, allowing for mindful enjoyment.

At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for Mate Dry Gin.
