Ehrenwert GmbH: One recipe – two families
One recipe – two families. Each family has its own carefully guarded secret recipe, and with the Lücke family this remained in the hands of grandfather Heinz and later his son Dieter for many decades. Long enough, thought sons Thomas and Christian. In any case, it is the ‘Felsenfeuer’ herb liqueur that once made the Lücke Distillery one of the most important in Münsterland. After the war they continued the success story which first began in the 18th century, with this herb liqueur, using the recipe that Heinz Lücke worked out. In the 1950s everyone was talking about it, but in the 1960s the era of the distillery and the herb liqueur ended. But not for good – 60 years later it celebrated its resurrection with the ‘Freudenfeuer’.
Whilst searching for a distillery, Thomas and Christian kept to family tradition, as their grandmother was a Sasse, and the Sasses’ fine distillery in Schöppingen is still well known today. Following a traditional recipe from 1947 the new liqueur is distilled in small batches and is bottled by hand after a ten-day rest period. Ready to enjoy: neat and ice cold like in the time of our grandfathers, or smoother, on ice with lightly pressed orange zest, or as a basis for a long drink with tonic water or ginger ale. To old times and new friends!
At the World Spirits Award, there was gold for Freudenfeuer.

Family of Hounds – Sought and found
Andrea Frigerio and his English wife, Lina, live in Monaco with their two dogs, Spot and Magda, two wonderful additions to the family. Since they started taking the two for walks in town, they have made many new friends. Andrea and Lina used to be red wine drinkers, who spent their holidays in the wine hills of Italy and France. It was only in 2013, while visiting a country estate in England, that they discovered their love for a good G & T. This developed into a passion, and their discussions soon revolved around what it would be like to create their own gin.
They tasted intensively, discarded aromas they didn’t like, and extracted the aromas they did. Together with the master distiller in an old distillery in Piedmont, they created their recipe for the gin: juniper, lemon and orange peel, pink grapefruit, lavender, thyme, cardamom, ginger and coriander. The first three ingredients come from Italy, the rest from Asia. “The juniper is really loud, like a brightly lit disco floor, and the other botanicals dance around it. Together, they are like a lively, attention-seeking dog that can’t sit still.”
In the future, they are looking to establish a small family of spirits, from gin to vodka and from grappa to vermouth – unmistakable in taste, but accessible to everyone. The core of the philosophy is going out with good friends, enjoying a good meal and even better spirits. The first step has already been taken …
At the World Spirits Award, there was double gold for Family of Hounds Gin.

Bienenhof Pausch: Uncompromisingly fanatic enjoyment freaks
Beekeeper Helga Pausch and fine brandy sommelier Albrecht Pausch are a likeable and skilled pair. Since 1996 their bee farm has followed ecological guidelines, with about 230 bee colonies, a distillery, a winery and a vinegar factory. 150 quince trees, 500 wild fruit trees, some old wild cherry trees and a young plantation with 800 fruit trees complete the ensemble. Fruit brandies and rare fine brandies from special honeys are produced in the distillery.
The basis for the distillates are various types of honey or ecologically cultivated fruit. Fine aromatic honeys are used for honey wines and liqueurs without any additives. The Pausches are also purists when it comes to their fine brandies and spirits – no added sugar, no flavourings, only 100% pure distillate. In the fermenting cellar with temperature-controlled fermentation tanks, they don’t use sulphuric acid in the fermentation of the fruit mash, which strictly follows guidelines from Bioland, the largest organic food association in Germany.
“We have dedicated ourselves to fine nuances, rather than the bold and robust. We offer fine spirits with delicate fruity components.” They are made using a traditional double distilling procedure and the finished spirits mature in a vaulted cellar until they are reduced to drinking strength. Some are also offered unfiltered, which means more typical aromas, tastes, and complexities.
The Master Class Distillery 2021 was awarded double gold for Vogelbeerbrand (rowanberry) obtained through maceration and distillation (World Spirits Award 2021), gold for Edelbrand Sauerkirsche (sour cherry), Edelbrand Wahlsche Schnapsbirne (pear), Edelbrand Löhrpflaume (plum) and Brombeerbrand (blackberry) obtained through maceration and distillation. It was awarded silver for Himbeerbrand (raspberry) obtained through maceration and distillation, Schwarze Johannisbeere (black currant), Edelbrand Rote Williams (pear) and Shyravalli Honigbrand (honey brandy matured in a barrel).

- Absinth
Distillerie du Val-de-Travers
www.absinthemotiers.com
Christophe Racine first came into contact with absinthe production at a very young age. As an apprentice in a chemist’s he naturally was also involved in the world of moonshiners at that time and he got to know many different recipes. In 1996 he took the plunge and became a moonshiner himself – at only 18 years old. He experimented and modified, and finally he decided on a recipe from the year 1903. Today – absinthe having been legalised in the meantime of course – distillation is both his job and his passion, and his absinthe variations are meticulously worked out to the smallest detail. “La Fine” is made from 13 plants, “La Fine Verte” from 20.
Like most producers in Val-de-Travers, Christophe Racine is also a member of the specialist absinthe association. This was founded on 1 March 2005, as the production of absinthe became legally authorised again in Switzerland. Historians confirm that this is where it originates: in this valley surrounded by limestone mountains, which passes right through the Jura from Neuenburg in Switzerland to Pontarlier in France.
At Christophe Racine’s you can not only taste and buy absinthe, but also receive an insight into the production, which plants are used and much more. In addition, a wide range of accessories for the rituals concerning the mysterious drink is available: clay fountains, made by craftsmen in the region and individually designed with colours and glazes, fountains made from hand-blown glass or even stainless steel, all kinds of glasses and spoons, and a special souvenir for friends of the “green fairy”.
At the World Spirits Award, all the effort to produce an authentic product was rewarded: there was gold for the classics La Fine Verte and La Fine, and silver for La Fine Clandestine.
